Fruit and Veggie Treats

Jennifer Larsen, D.V.M., an assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, believes every good dog deserves a treat, but reminds pet owners that they don't have to spend a fortune on healthy treats.

You have plenty of suitable Bouvie treats in your refrigerator right now. "Fruits and vegetables make very good treats for dogs, and you can feed more of them than you can store-bought treats, which have more calories." she says.

Here are some of her favorites your Bouvier des Flandres might also love:

• Apple slices

• Banana slices

• Berries

• Carrots

• Green beans

Do not feed grapes, raisins, onions, or garlic cloves to your Bouvier because of potential toxicity. Larsen says that some fruits and vegetables could pose a choking hazard for aggressive chewers and advises becoming aware of your dog's eating style.

"Some dogs will gnaw off small pieces, while others break off large hunks and swallow them," she says. "Choking can occur with anything, so owners should supervise their dogs and pay attention to how they chew. Voracious, frantic, possessive dogs should be carefully watched."

Larsen also says that fruit and vegetable treats, especially hard ones like baby carrots, apples, cauliflower, or broccoli, could also be chopped or minced so your Bouvier can't swallow a large chunk. "However, you would not get the gnawing benefit," she says.

House Of Bouvs sends home a list of safe/toxic human foods for new Bouvier in every puppy packet. We also post images of these lists in our .pdf Library here on our website.
