GREAT DIY HOLIDAY GIFT FOR BOUVIER LOVERS!!!
BBQ Beef Bones, a treat for Bouvies that can be made at home. Here are the ingredients and directions:
Ingredients:
- 3 cups 100-percent whole-wheat flour (or substitute with oat, rice, or potato flour for Bouvs with wheat allergies)
- ¾ cup beef broth (low-sodium, no MSG)
- ½ cup non-fat powdered milk (optional)
- ½ cup shortening or ¼ cup canola oil
- 1 egg
- 8-ounce can of organic, low-sodium tomato sauce
- 2 to 3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
- ½ teaspoon blackstrap molasses (or regular baking molasses)
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.
3. Add the shortening or oil to the dry ingredients and mix well.
4. In a separate bowl, beat the egg into the beef broth until smooth.
5. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix by hand until a ball of dough is formed. Adjust the consistency with water or flour if needed.
6. Roll the dough to about ¼-inch thick and cut using a bone-shaped cookie cutter.
7. Lightly spray or grease a cookie sheet and place the cookies close together.
8. Bake the cookies at 400 degrees for approximately 15 to 20 minutes or until brown on the bottom. Remove from the oven and let them cool.
9. To make the BBQ sauce, mix ½ teaspoon of molasses with the entire can of tomato sauce until well combined.
10. Lightly brush the cooled cookies with the BBQ sauce and sprinkle with parmesan cheese.
11. Bake the treats at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until the edges of the bones begin to darken slightly.
12. Let the treats cool overnight.
Alternate versions:
- For BBQ Drumsticks, use chicken broth instead of beef broth and shape the dough into drumstick shapes.
- Vegetable broth can be used for a meatless treat.
This recipe makes about a pound of treats.
