Next time you work to correct your puppy's leash-pulling habits, notice what you do when you stop walking. Absentmindedly allowing your puppy to pull a step or two to sniff a bush or greet passersby while you pause to chat with a friend or answer your cell phone reinforces pulling the same as if you were still walking.
"You must understand that every time your dog pulls and you follow, he learns that it's a viable technique to get where he wants to go" says trainer Victoria Schade of Doylestown, Pa. "Consistency is key for successful leash walking"
This consistency requires your absolute awareness every moment your puppy wears her leash to prevent inadvertent reinforcement for pulling. Never move in the direction your puppy pulls; only allow her to sniff or walk forward when the leash goes slack.
Your diligence now will result in a dog who behaves nicely on leash for a lifetime.
