PetMD, by Chewy, includes one of the best articles we've seen on fleas, ticks and other external parasites.
If you're interested in comparing products or knowing more about these troublesome critters, and when they are active in your area (our vet says they are never fully dormant in Pennsylvania!), please check out their extensive review (with cool infographics!) here: PetMD on Fleas and Ticks in the United States.
Please note: this article makes a very insightful reference to the MDR-1 gene.
Some breeds (such as Collies, Australian shepherds, and Shetland Sheepdogs, etc.) carry a genetic risk factor for a mutated gene that causes drug sensitivity. These dogs cannot safely process certain drugs, including some ingredients in (flea and tick) preventatives.
Many veterinarians recommend testing dogs for the MDR-1 gene, especially affected breeds. All of our Bouviers ARE TESTED CLEAR for the MDR-1 gene mutation. Individual pups may vary, but we have not yet seen a mutation arise.
FYI: We use Seresto collars and we are moving toward using Vectra3D for a broader spectrum of coverage and because our Bouvies playfully remove collars from one another!
We also use a natural flea, tick, mosquito and fly deterrent in the form of Neem spray (often used with plants). It is highly effective in strongly infested areas, such as Alaska and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. You can spray it directly on your Bouvie's coat. Head's up! It has a slightly unpleasant smell, but it's healthy and it works!
We highly recommend keeping a tick removal tool handy at home.
