I am 56 years old and I am the "kennel master" for The House Of Bouvs. In fact, as a sole proprietor, I AM The House Of Bouvs! It's a responsibility, when taken seriously, morphs into a lifestyle of caretaking and schedule management.
Last fall, I got COVID for the first time. It knocked me off my feet when I least expected it: with a litter in The House, living in a new town with very few friends, and 90 miles away from my nearest relative.
This fall, I've taken steps to try to prevent a season repeat of 2022 along with getting booster shots (which I didn't previously think were necessary since I live/work alone), I've also spent months looking for reliable help - in the event of an emergency or simply a desire to take a few days of vacation some day. While my situation is a bit "hairier" than a 1 or 2 Bouv family, getting organized is still an important step for anyone with pets relying on them for daily care and attention.
Document your dog's typical day: feeding schedule, routine outings, medications, unusual quirks, and vet contact. Post it on a bulletin board. Should you unexpectedly need someone to watch your dog, they'll have your notes about her daily routine.
Contact at least two individuals you trust and ask them if they'd be willing to come to your home, read the schedule, and follow your instructions in the event you need their help. Have a couple of practice sessions with each person, when they can ask you questions and add to your notes, before you really need their help.
Do you have any suggestions you would add for emergency pet care preparedness? Please leave them in the comments below! We welcome your ideas and experiences.
