Every Bouvier comes with a unique personality. Being sensitively aware of your pup's temperament will help you to strengthen your bond. If you watch your Bouv she will teach you how to bond with her, says Victoria Schade, a dog trainer, in Doylestown, Pa., and author of Bonding With Your Dog: A Trainer's Secrets for Building a Better Relationship. If a Bouv has been under-socialized, it might be more of a challenge to draw her out and begin the bonding process.
Schade's Three Ways to Boost the Bond:
• Learn to read and respect your pup's body language. Watch your Bouv to learn. Recognize signs of fear or discomfort in your pup, then you'll know when to give her some support and guidance as her "leader" and most important trainer.
• Start a positive training program ASAP, preferably using a clicker. All members of the household can take part, and a clicker makes training seem like a game.
• Incorporate play into your daily routine as much as possible, but make sure to choose fun and games your pup appreciates. "Not all dogs are natural fetchers," Schade says. "If that's the case with yours, try 'hide the treat or toy,' where your dog ferrets out a hidden goody.'
