This is why I don't like to take my Bouvies to places where other dogs congregate. I've been seeing "mysterious" illnesses and viruses like this popping up in the news with more regularity in the last 4-5 years.

A mysterious respiratory illness is affecting dogs in 10 states, including Illinois. The illness starts as a cough and gradually worsens, with symptoms including coughing, sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nose, trouble breathing, and fatigue.

The illness is resistant to antibiotics and dogs may test negative for common causes of respiratory illnesses.

Dog owners are advised to take their pets to a vet immediately if they observe any of these symptoms.

The illness is most likely contracted through contact with other dogs in places such as dog parks, kennels, dog daycares, and groomers.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture has identified three categories of the illness:

  • chronic mild-moderate tracheobronchitis,

  • chronic pneumonia, and

  • acute pneumonia.

Dog owners are advised to reduce contact with large numbers of unknown dogs, sick dogs, and communal water bowls.

They should also ensure their dogs are up to date with necessary vaccinations.

Veterinarians in Oregon, Colorado, New Hampshire, California, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, and Florida have observed cases of the illness. As winter progresses, it's expected to become prevalent in many more states.

UPDATE:

Scientists at the University of New Hampshire may have identified a pathogen that has sickened possibly thousands of dogs and killed some of them across the country.
